Updated 24/04/2024 at 22:07 GMT

Welcome to live coverage from day five of the World Snooker Championship. John Higgins leads Jamie Jones 5-4 as Ryan Day stunned Barry Hawkins 10-8. Earlier, Ronnie O'Sullivan opened an 8-1 lead over Jackson Page and Mark Allen overcame Robbie Williams 10-6. In the morning session, Jack Lisowski edged past Ding Junhui 10-9 in an epic, while Kyren Wilson completed a 10-1 rout of Dominic Dale.

'Flying up in the air!' - O'Sullivan somehow still pots with bizarre shot

Hearn on the future of Crucible

Latest: Higgins 5-4 Jones

Quite an absorbing evening's snooker with John Higgins edging ahead in the race to 10. We will be back at 2:15pm tomorrow when Ronnie O'Sullivan finishes up against Jackson Page holding an 8-1 lead in the first round, while David Gilbert and Rob Milkins begin their last-16 match. See you then.

Higgins 5-3 Jones (38-95)

Very, very impressive from Jamie as the final red is rolled into the left centre before he slams in the blue to right middle. Yellow and green are bagged, and so is the brown. A clearance of 82 from Jones, who trails 5-4 overnight. They play to a finish at 7pm on Thursday with the winner meeting Mark Allen in the last 16.

Higgins 5-3 Jones (38-44)

Mid-range red hits the back of the pocket, and suddenly this looks like a golden chance to close to within one frame overnight. But he then overcooks the screw shot on black. But in goes the recovery pot on red.
picture

'What a turnaround' - Higgins surprisingly misses swerve shot to concede foul

Higgins 5-3 Jones (38-29)

A really decent snooker by Jamie prompts the error by John, who leaves an easy starter, and suddenly Jamie has a decent chance to piece together some points. In goes black and those reds look ripe for potting here.

Higgins 5-3 Jones (38-9)

Jamie picks out a brilliant plant on reds to right centre before dropping in a low black. In goes a mid-range red, but nothing else at this visit.

Higgins 5-3 Jones (38-0)

Higgins looking to finish off a very good night's work by winning a fifth straight frame from 3-1 behind. A run of 38, but out of position and will look to play a telling safety shot.

Result: Hawkins 8-10 Day

A quite astonishing recovery from the Welshman, who wins five straight frames from 8-5 behind to complete a 10-8 win against Barry Hawkins. A closing run of 61 gets him over the line. Up next is (probably) Ronnie O'Sullivan in the last 16.

Higgins 4-3 Jones (56-11)

Another super double from John on a red to move within touching distance of the frame. Knocks the green safe, and Jamie has seen enough. A 5-3 lead for John. One more frame to play of this first session before they resume tomorrow night at 7pm.

Higgins 4-3 Jones (43-11)

No one big hit from John in this frame, but he is playing some fabulous shots. Dominant in the safety department, and applying serious pressure to the Jones game. Another mistake by the Welshman presents Higgins with another scoring opportunity.

Hawkins 8-9 Day

Day moves one frame from victory over on the other side of the curtain. Trailed 8-5, but has now won four straight frames. All happening tonight at the 'Home of Snooker'.

Higgins 4-3 Jones (26-11)

Higgins really starting to come on strong in this match. Momentum firmly with him, and his cue arm is working to good effect. A very decent chance to plough on here after Jones can't get started.

Higgins 3-3 Jones (80-0)

This is vintage Higgins at the moment. Really is beginning to turn on the style here. Another run of 66 from the Scotsman as he moves 4-3 clear having trailed 3-1. Looks every inch the four-time world champion.

Higgins 3-3 Jones (20-0)

Jamie throws in a pretty miserable safety shot as white clatters into the pack of reds. Higgins handed a simple enough starter to get moving again.

Higgins 3-3 Jones (14-0)

John clearly feeling good about himself as pokes home a delicious long red. That was a glorious shot. Really was. And he rams in a black. Wasn't easy, but in goes the black. Chance then for Higgins to assert himself. But he is out of position quickly so just the 14 points.

Hawkins 8-8 Day

Suddenly it is Ryan Day on a roll as another contribution of 68 sees him level up at 8-8 in the race to 10. All happening out there.

Higgins 2-3 Jones (105-0)

No recovery from Jones this time as Higgins prepares to bring this match level again at 3-3. Very smooth from the Wishaw icon. 62 from Higgins to go with the earlier 57. This one all level at 3-3. Three more frames to come of the sesh.

Higgins 2-3 Jones (58-0)

Split on reds off the blue is far from ideal though. A tad unfortunate, and a run of 57 is the end of break. A safety shot to come. Higgins has been the dominant force in this match, but somehow trails 3-2. Jones goes for a long red. Nowhere near the angle and he clatters a pink. Higgins responds with another fine cut on red.

Higgins 2-3 Jones (51-0)

John is such a classy technician. Looks to really be settling into his stride out there as break passes the 50-mark with black bagged. Every chance to get this frame sewn up to level up the match at 3-3.

Higgins 2-3 Jones (6-0)

Early tempter for Jones off the Higgins break-off shot, but he can't find his range. Too much pace on the attempt too. John thumps in a mid-range red. Really got hold of that one.

Hawkins 8-7 Day

All hotting up on the table next door as a 62 run from Day sees him close back to within one frame of 'The Hawk' at 8-7.

Higgins 1-3 Jones (75-23)

Jones misses a red trying to escape from a snooker to boost the Higgins charge and the Scotsman then sinks a long red to finally finish matters off. Jones has seen enough. A 3-2 lead for Jones in the race to 10.

Higgins 1-3 Jones (70-23)

Jones continues to declare an interest in this frame heading for the final two reds. Still needs a snooker, but this frame not yet in the Higgins locker. And he has lost the previous two frames when they looked finished.

Higgins 1-3 Jones (70-0)

picture

Watch unusual moment ball drops in without Higgins potting it

In goes the black to leave Jamie needing a snooker, but he isn't on the next red. Which will annoy John. Very surprising. 67 left on the table.

Higgins 1-3 Jones (54-0)

A timely run of 42 from John, but refuses a long red to play safe. Jones is tempted by red down the table to yellow bag. Doesn't drop and Higgins mops up the missed red. Another chance then to get his frame won and close to 3-2 behind. Surely must put this frame to bed here and now.

Higgins 1-3 Jones (12-0)

Higgins back out looking to claw his way back into this contest. Bangs in a brilliant long red followed by green, but faced with a tricky mid-range red to remain at table. And he nudges it home to land on black. Very nice shot.

Hawkins 8-6 Day

Ryan Day wins his first frame of the night to stop the bleeding. Was leading 5-2, but lost six straight frames before pocketing the 14th frame with a solid 78 run.

Higgins 1-2 Jones (72-78)

Well, a brilliant shot from the black free ball to land on green. Powers in green before clearing up the colours to the black, and Jones is somehow 3-1 ahead. Has pinched two successive frames for a 3-1 advantage. Higgins with work to do early on. Five more frames of the session to play.

Higgins 1-2 Jones (72-53)

Down to the colours then as the blue disappears. Higgins then slots a brilliant yellow with tough cueing to leave Jones needing a snooker. A run of 68 from John is just what he needed. In a very strong position to restore parity at 2-2 here. But he then somehow misses a swerve shot to green around the pink and leaves a free ball too. What an amazing turnaround this could be.

Higgins 1-2 Jones (37-46)

Would expect Higgins to go close to winning this frame. All these balls are ideally place to produce a frame-winning contribution from John.

Higgins 1-2 Jones (5-46)

Jones breaking down on 46 before he is forced to run safe to baulk. A slightly underwhelming finish with Higgins then producing an attacking safety shot to further trouble his opponent. Jones catches the red thick trying to run safe, and suddenly Higgins has his opportunity to get his scoring boots on.

Higgins 1-2 Jones (4-30)

Stunning long red by Jones early in the fourth frame. Really hit the white plum in face to run through for the black. Should take a big boost from pinching third frame as he nips in a black off the spot seconds later. Lovely control of that shot is appreciated by the Crucible crowd as he then clips in a red using rest, and gets cannon on another red to free up the black. Very decent stuff.

Hawkins 8-5 Day

Another knock of 59 from Hawkins in the 13th frame as a 5-4 deficit overnight becomes an 8-5 lead. Hawkins needs two more to advance to the last 16 and a probable meeting with Ronnie O'Sullivan on Sunday and Monday.

Higgins 1-1 Jones (55-66)

A composed clearance of 35 from Jones, who wins a frame of around 42 minutes to move 2-1 ahead. Higgins had a glorious chance to claim the frame, but slipped up late on and Jones pinches it.

Higgins 1-1 Jones (55-44)

Jamie goes for another tough red down cushion to top pocket. Red comes back out, but Higgins hammers his attempt at red. Far too much pace as he sticks up red for his opponent. A rueful smile from John. Chance to counter punch then.

Higgins 1-1 Jones (55-31)

Down to the final red then as Jones tries to snake it down the side rail. Red comes back up the table to nestle behind the blue. This frame still well in the mixer as Jamie is left with a pot at the red from distance. But nothing doing. Frame been running for 36 minutes so far. No nearer a conclusion.

Higgins 1-1 Jones (55-30)

Some very fine tactical exchanges with the two reds tied up near the black spot on top cush. A lead of 25 points looks very handy.

Higgins 1-1 Jones (55-30)

John trying to roll a red along the baulk cushion, but doesn't drop to yellow bag before Jamie snicks in the red. Still not much doing elsewhere with two reds tied up. Just a safety from the world No. 41.

Higgins 1-1 Jones (40-29)

Excellent double on a red by John to gain access to the old green baize. Not a frame-winning chance at the moment, but certainly chance to build an advantage. A few errors creeping into his opponent's game at the wrong time. But then Higgins is too thick in missing the final red in the open with the other four reds near side rails.

Hawkins 7-5 Day

A third straight frame is reeled off by Hawkins, who adds a 50 knock to move 7-5 to the good. Day will be keen to stop the rot before the interval.

Higgins 1-1 Jones (8-29)

But not really making any serious capital as he adds only eight to his total before running safe.

Higgins 1-1 Jones (8-22)

Super snooker by Jones to stick Higgins tight behind the brown. John can't escape from the snooker and sticks up a red for Jones to pot the red with rest and free up the black too. Excellent shot.
picture

'Wow!' - Higgins apologises for 'very fortunate fluke'

Higgins 1-1 Jones (1-7)

Safety blunder by John presents his opponent with chance to score, but Jamie misses a tricky red thick bridging over another red. Chance immediately passes to Higgins, who then misses a straight blue to green bag.

Hawkins 6-5 Day

A 92 break from Hawkins in the 10th frame before he dominates the 11th frame to move 6-5 clear from 5-4 behind overnight.

Higgins 0-1 Jones (70-14)

Jones not making much progress in cutting the Higgins lead as mid-range red eludes the Welshman. Not the best spot of cueing and the Scotsman finishes off the frame in his favour with a few more pots. Back to 1-1 then in this first-round match.

Higgins 0-1 Jones (61-8)

Chance for Higgins of a long red, but he can't sink the object ball. Jones returns to table looking for a counter clearance of his own. Only problem ball on table looks to be the yellow.

Higgins 0-1 Jones (61-0)

Not quite over the line, but Higgins builds a lead of 61 points. Looking for one more red to seal the deal in his favour. Five reds left on table. That fluke was a nice one to get.

Higgins 0-1 Jones (29-0)

Well, a huge spot of luck for Higgins as he misses a straight yellow only to see the yellow rattle the jaws then head back across table to drop in right centre bag. What a timely fluke. Shake of the head from John, but he will accept those all day long.

Higgins 0-1 Jones (13-0)

Great chance for John to hit back straight away as Jamie can't nudge in a red over a top pocket coming off another red, and he also develops the black. Would dearly love a big response, but he is out of position off the brown heading into reds. Just safety to follow.

Higgins 0-0 Jones (0-118)

A brilliant run of 118 from Jones to move one ahead of Higgins. A dream start to the evening.

Higgins 0-0 Jones (0-101)

What a start to the night by Jones. In goes the century straight off the bat. An assured way to get your evening up and running.

Higgins 0-0 Jones (0-72)

A very, very impressive start by Jamie. Has been so precise with his control of the white ball. Can see why he did for Robbo in qualifying on this showing. Looks full of confidence, and is heading for a 1-0 lead as a red to left middle disappears.

Higgins 0-0 Jones (0-27)

Lovely shot to nothing becomes a shot to something for Jamie as in goes the red followed by a brown. Plenty of reds in open. So this is a chance to score a few points. Jones looking very busy at the business end of the table as he lands on black nicely with a solid cannon.

Higgins 0-0 Jones (0-0)

Bit of a nervy start for Jones as he fails to clip home a cut on a red to green bag. Almost fluke it in the yellow pocket, but red stays above ground. Higgins eyes up a shot to nothing. Rattles the red in jaws of a top bag before screwing back to baulk.

Higgins 0-0 Jones (0-0)

As always, an expectant crowd inside the Crucible for these matches tonight. Higgins making a 30th straight appearance at the Crucible. Higgins emerging to the sounds of The Proclaimers' 500 miles. Higgins hopes to walk towards the last 16 tonight. Jones gets the action up and running. First man to 10 frames will prevail.

Lisowski defeats Ding 10-9

One of the best matches we'll see at the Crucible this week. Great nerve from Lisowski potting two fantastic long reds in the final frame to help himself to victory. You have to feel sorry for Ding. He goes out in the first round for the fourth year on the trot.

Ding 9-9 Lisowski (0-70*)

A fantastic effort from Lisowski, he is now through to the second round.

Ding 9-9 Lisowski (0-41*)

Ding refuses a long red and Liswoski, from a similar position, takes it on and pots it and he has a great chance to win the match now.

What bad luck, Lisowski has snookered himself from the pink and black colour after going into the pack and the frame is still open.

Lisowski with a remarkable long red to give himself the first chance of reaching the second round.

Lisowski misses the type of long red he has been potting all match and two reds later, Ding has left him needing snookers.

Ding 7-8 Lisowski

After a lengthy exchange including a four-cushion escape from Ding, the Chinese player pots the last red and goes on to clear up to win the frame.

I was a little premature. Lisowski needs two snookers but is playing on - as well he might.

Ding 6-8 Lisowski (60*-0)

This half century has secured the frame for Ding. This game has legs in it yet.

Ding 6-8 Lisowski (18*-0)

An aggressive shot to open the pack doesn't work out, but Ding flukes a red a couple of shots on and now has the balls in position to win the frame at this visit.

Ding 6-8 Lisowski (1*-0)

Lisowski misses a long pot and Ding now has a chance to build a score - albeit with the black on the bottom cushion.

Ding 6-8 Lisowski

Ding concedes, he secured one of the three snookers needed before fouling himself (that doesn't sound right). Lisowski is now two frames from victory.

Ding 6-7 Lisowski (31-69)

Ding's long potting lets him down again. He misses the red from the D and then Lisowski pots it himself, plus the pink, to surely win the frame. Ding is playing on though.

Ding 6-7 Lisowski (31-62)

An awful error from Lisowski hitting the blue when trying to swerve around to hit a red and now the frame is open once more.

Ding 6-7 Lisowski (26-62)

The Green goes in-off giving Ding one of the snookers.

Lisowski with an in-off but Ding misses his pot and is fortunate to leave nothing on.

Ding 6-7 Lisowski (17-34)

Ding misses the pack of reds off the blue and it is end of break.

Ding 6-7 Lisowski (4*-34)

A very good 34, but Lisowski fell out of position after freeing the black and Ding potted a fantastic red into left middle to start a counter attack.

Ding 6-7 Lisowski (3-11*)

Lisowski negotiating a tricky table, with black blocked by a glut of reds, well at present.

Ding 6-7 Lisowski (3-0)

Back on the table, Ding has the first minor breakthrough but we are now locked in a safety exchange.

Ding 6-7 Lisowski
