Allisha Gray scored 17 points as the Atlanta Dream beat the Connecticut Sun 78-74 on Friday night, while the Phoenix Mercury defeated the Los Angeles Sparks.
The Dream also had Tina Charles to thank as her 14 points, along with six rebounds and four steals, gave them a four-point victory that ended a run of three consecutive defeats.
The win was only their third victory in 10 matches, while for Connecticut it is just their third defeat of an impressive season.
DeWanna Bonner high-scored for Connecticut with 17 points, and Dijonai Carrington contributed 15 points in a match that saw no team gain more than a five-point lead at any time.
With the match finely balanced with seconds remaining, both Jordin Canada and Charles hit two free-throws to make the difference.
In Phoenix, Kahleah Copper scored 24 points and Diana Taurasi 20 (including an impressive five three-pointers), as the Mercury beat the Sparks 92-78 in the night’s other match-up.
Copper’s hot-streak saw her score 11 points in the third quarter, with 1-0 of those in the first six minutes of the second half, taking her team 63-55 clear.
The advantage got as high as 87-70 when Copper made a lay-up in the fourth quarter.
Copper scored 10 points in the opening six minutes of the second half to help Phoenix build a 63-55 lead.
Brittney Griner scored 18 points and 11 rebounds in a strong performance for the Sun, while Dearica Hamby’s 29 points - a career best - came in vain.
