Super-bantamweight Francisco Rodriguez has died from injuries sustained following a stoppage defeat against Teon Kennedy at the Blue Horizon in Philadelphia on Friday night.
The 25 year-old was stopped on his feet in the 10th round but collapsed soon after oxygen was applied. Rodriguez was immediately taken from the ring on a stretcher and rushed by ambulance to Hahnemann University Hospital where he underwent emergency brain surgery. Rodriguez never regained consciousness.
“It is with a heavy heart that we make this announcement,” said promoter Dominic Pesoli of 8 Count Productions. “Francisco was family to us and we all loved him very much. He was very popular with fight fans in Chicago and will be deeply missed.”
Pesoli added, “I’d like to thank boxing fans across the country for their calls of concerns these last two days. It’s meant a great deal to us as we awaited word on his condition.”
Details and funeral arrangements will be announced as soon as they are known.
