by Paul Upham: Australian Robbie "Bomber" Peden (pictured) is the new IBF junior lightweight world champion after defeating American Nate Campbell by 8th round TKO on Wednesday night at the Vodafone Arena in Melbourne. It was a brutal rematch and one of the toughest contests seen 'Dowunder' in many years. "Everyone who has helped me, I love you so much," said a beaming Peden 25-2 (14), in the ring after the win.

It was a fight in every sense of the word as both men gave everything they had to become world champion and capture the IBF title that had been vacated by Erik Morales when he elected to face Marco Antonio Barrera last November. Campbell 25-3-1 (21) suffered bad cuts over both eyes, which saw blood streaming down his face by the 7th round. The first cut sustained over his right eye in the 4th round saw the American claim it was from a head clash, while Peden held his hands out to referee John Wright indicating it was from a punch. With the referee un-sighted, he approached all three ringside judges to seek direction on the source of the cut, but none of the judges could give a definite answer. Dr John Jory inspected the cut and allowed the fight to continue and the referee ruled that it was caused by a punch.

32 year-old Campbell was now looking to win by knockout and Peden responded with his own firepower, making for an action packed fight. At the start of the 5th round, Campbell was penalised one point for a low blow after being warned a number of times by the referee.

In the 7th round, Campbell sustained a cut on the left eye and the referee ruled it was caused by a Peden punch. It then turned into a war on the inside as both men tried to finish the other. A valiant Campbell continued to fight back even though he was bloody and battered. He just kept throwing single home run shots desperately trying to take Peden out.

After 31 year-old Peden sustained a repeated attack on Campbell on the ropes where the "Bomber" landed a number of heavy punches without return, referee Wright stepped in and stopped the fight with Campbell still on his feet at the 2:53 minute mark of round 8

"I got away from the game plan a few times and he caught me with some good shots, but nothing that was going to hurt me," said Peden. "I proved that I am a better boxer than I showed last time. I can fight with the best in the world. Why do you think Erik Morales gave the belt up for? Because he didn't want none of this. This is the beginning. None of them would give me a shot at the world title because I am a hard fight. Now I have got the belt, they can come to me."

Also on the card, Shannan Taylor KO4 Ruben Diaz at junior middleweight, Sam Soliman KO4 Miguel Julio at middleweight, Sharon Anyos TKO7 Neris Rincon at featherweight, Michael Katsidis KO1 Eduardo Alvarez at lightweight, Adam Vella TKO2 Earl Louke at super middleweight and Dale Westerman W10 Justin Clements at light heavyweight.
