India set England’s T20 World Cup final hopes in flames as they won by 68 runs on Thursday in Guyana to set up a clash with South Africa for the title.
India reached their first T20 World Cup final since 2014, with the win led by Rohit Sharma (57 off 39) and Suryakumar Yadav (47 off 36).
Rohit hit his third fifty of the tournament during India’s innings.
The win likely went a long way to burying bitter memories of their 2022 T20 World Cup semi-final defeat to England.
India posted 171-7 in 20 overs before bowling out England for 103 in 16.4 overs in a match that was delayed by persistent rain and a wet outfield at the National Stadium in Providence.
Virat Kohli (9) and Rishabh Pant (4) both departed early, leaving India at 40-2 in the powerplay as England's opening pair of Reece Topley and Jofra Archer managed to put India under pressure early on.
The partnership of Rohit and Suryakumar then took over and, undeterred by a rain break, took India to 113-3 in the 14th over.
India scored 53 runs in the last five overs to leave England needing 172 to keep their title defence alive.
Axar Patel needed just a single ball to dismiss Jos Buttler (23) after England had reached 26 without loss in three overs.
The spinner ripped through England's top order and Kuldeep Yadav took care of the rest as both took three wickets, with Jasprit Bumrah claiming the final wicket of Archer to hand India their 68-run victory.
Patel, who picked up the player of the match award, said: "I knew that the wicket was stopping and had something for the bowlers. I just tried to bowl in good areas.
"I tried to bowl a little slower and it worked.
"Our batters told us the pitch wasn't easy to hit the ball. We felt it was a good total."
India bowled well but England's shot selection was poor during their 16 overs, in which the defending champions were bowled out for 103.
Harry Brook was the top scorer for England with 25, followed by Buttler, and a late flurry from Archer who made 21.
Speaking after the defeat, Buttler said: "India outplayed us, certainly. We let them maybe get 20/25 too many on a challenging surface that they played well on. They fully deserved to win.
"With the rain around, we didn't think the conditions would change and they didn't - they just outplayed us and got a very good score. I don't think the toss was the difference between us.
"They've got some fantastic spinners. Our two [Adil Rashid and Liam Livingstone] bowled well but in hindsight, yeah, probably should've bowled Moeen [Ali] in our innings with the way spin was playing. But with a good score and their brilliant bowling attack it was always going to be a tough chase.
"With everything that's happened in the tournament I'm really proud of the group's efforts. We can only play who's in front of us. We've had a lot of adversity but we have stuck together really well, we played good cricket in patches but unfortunately came up short when we needed it most."
India will face South Africa in the final on Saturday, June 29, at the Kensington Oval in Bridgetown, Barbados.
