Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic were involved in a huge crash in stage 5 of the Criterium du Dauphine, prompting the race to be neutralised.
The incident occurred on the descent of the cote de Bel-Air, as many riders fell with Roglic (Bora-Hansgrohe), Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) and Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) amongst those who fell.
Reports soon emerged that Roglic and Ayuso had returned to their feet. Evenepoel also got back up while appearing to nurse a knock to his right knee.
Evenepoel and Roglic were involved in a crash at the Tour of the Basque Country in April, with Evenepoel breaking his collarbone in that incident.
It is thought that the crash was caused by the wet roads, prompting riders at the rear end of the peloton to brake when viewing riders colliding further up, but could not gain any traction on the slippery surface.
Race officials promptly neutralised the race, as those riders who escaped the crash were told to stop racing.
Steven Kruijswijk (Team Visma - Lease a Bike) was among those to be worst affected, with the official Criterium de Dauphine account on X stating that the Dutchman had been evacuated by ambulance.
His team-mate Dylan van Baarle had also taken a hard fall after injuring his collarbone.
Romain Combaud (dsm-firmenich-postNL) is also said to have suffered at the back of the bunch, while Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe) injured his left knee and elbow.
Race organisers later suspended the stage.
"The stage will be neutralized due to the lack of medical assistance still available. No time will be taken on this stage, and there will be no stage winner," read a post on X.
