Sir Bradley Wiggins will take time out of preparations for the 2016 Rio Olympics to take part in the Tour de Yorkshire, its organisers have announced
Wiggins' contract with Team Sky expired in April last year after five years with the team. The 35-year-old subsequently set up his own team - Team WIggins - in order to nurture British road and track cycling talent, and switched his focus to qualifying for the team pursuit at the Rio Olympics, this summer.
The Tour de Yorkshire's inaugural edition was held only a year ago, and Wiggins dominated the headlines at the time riding for his newly-established team in the event.
Alongside Wiggins, world champion Lizzie Armitstead, Dani King and Dame Sarah Storey will also participate in the event taking place from April 29 to May 1, and the inclusion of such big names will no doubt give further credibility to the comparatively new competition.
Having started out as a track cyclist, Wiggins switched to road cycling in the early 2000s, winning both the Tour de France and gold in the road cycling time trial at the London Olympics in 2012.
