Tirreno-Adriatico 2024: Jonas Vingegaard powers to win on Stage 6 with impressive attack to increase race lead

Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) stamped his class on Tirreno-Adriatico by riding to an impressive solo victory on the Monte Petrano climb. After a dominant win on Stage 5 on Friday, the Dane produced a carbon copy - albeit he left it later in the day before striking out for victory. He holds a commanding lead heading into the final stage on Sunday.

Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) reinforced his position as the dominant rider at Tirreno-Adriatico by taking Stage 6 to increase his race lead.

The Tour de France champion stamped his class on the race when taking Stage 5 on Friday, and proved in a different league to his rivals once again.

He sat in the wheels as the peloton chased down the remnants of a breakaway before forging clear on the final climb.

Jai Hindley (Bora–Hansgrohe) and Juan Ayuso (UAE Team Emirates) were unable to hold the wheel as Vingegaard powered to victory atop Monte Petrano.

With one stage remaining, Vingegaard likely only needs to remain on his bike to clinch victory on Sunday.

Richard Carapaz (EF Education–EasyPost) got into an early break, and he was the only one able to push on on the final climb.

Bora-Hansgrohe put the hammer down in the chase group and whittled down Carapaz's advantage to 10 seconds when Hindley launched his attack with 6.5kms to run.

Vingegaard responded to Hindley’s attack and Ayuso was the only other rider able to hold the wheel.

Visma-Lease a Bike star Vingegaard showed his class when taking the leader’s jersey on Friday, and he gave another demonstration of his climbing power when jumping away with six kilometres remaining.

Ayuso attempted to keep tabs, but the Dane dropped him and stormed away for a second stage win.

Vinggaard crossed the line 26 seconds clear of Ayuso and Hindley, and extended his lead on general classification to 1:24.

Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) finished fifth on the stage to sit ninth on GC.
