Tadej Pogacar, Jonas Vingegaard, Mark Cavendish, Wout van Aert, Mathieu van der Poel, Remco Evenepoel, Primoz Roglic and Tom Pidcock are all competing at the 2024 Tour de France. There are numerous thrilling sub-plots beyond the race for yellow, with Van Aert and Van der Poel set to light it up in the hunt for stage victories and Cavendish targeting a record 35th win on the sport's grandest stage.
Van Hooydonck warns against thinking Tour de France is Vingegaard v Pogacar
He may have lost the past two editions but one question is on everyone's lips ahead of the Tour de France: can anyone stop Tadej Pogacar?
The Slovenian sensation (UAE Team Emirates) is the outstanding candidate for the yellow jersey given the huge question marks that hang over his rivals and his stunning recent win at the Giro d'Italia.
The 2024 Tour was originally billed as a four-way showdown - until three of those contenders went down in the same horrific crash in April.
Defending champion Jonas Vingegaard will lead Visma-Lease a Bike's charge in France, but he is very much the underdog after suffering a collapsed lung, a broken collarbone and multiple rib fractures in the carnage at the Itzulia Basque Country.
Remco Evenepoel (Soudal Quick-Step) is also on the comeback path after also breaking his collarbone in that crash, and while Primoz Roglic (Bora-Hansgrohe) came off relatively unscathed, he only returned to racing two months later at the Criterium du Dauphine, which he won.
Away from the GC battle, Wout van Aert (Visma-Lease a Bike) and Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin–Deceuninck) are set to renew their rivalry, with fellow multi-talented star Tom Pidcock (Ineos Grenadiers) hoping to turn his promising mountain bike form into another stage win.
Oh, and there's the small matter of Mark Cavendish (Astana Qazaqstan) hunting an outright record 35th stage victory, having postponed retirement to compete on cycling's greatest stage one last time.
So when is the Tour de France? And more importantly, how can you watch it?
