The 24-year-old midfielder was suspended for the trip to Tynecastle to face Hearts before the international break after going through the disciplinary points threshold.
Gillespie sat with his Accies-supporting family and the rest of the travelling fans in the Roseburn Stand in Gorgie as the Lanarkshire side lost 2-0 and is back in contention for the visit of the Dons with a different viewpoint.
"My family go to all the games, it doesn't matter if I am playing or not," he said.
"It was strange sitting with them because obviously I don't (normally) get the chance to.
"Some of the Hamilton fans were saying that it was weird to see a player sit in with them because we usually sit in the main stand if we aren't playing.
"You see things differently. When you are playing you are mainly focusing on the ball but when you are watching from stand you see the whole pitch. You see a different game."
Gillespie believes that as a holding midfielder, he walks a fine line with regards tackles.
He said: " It was the first time I had missed a game this season. It was six bookings.
"I have actually got seven because I got booked against St Johnstone before I missed the Hearts game.
"I think it is due in part to my style of play and the position I play, sitting in front of the back four.
"The gaffer has never said I am getting too many yellows. If I was getting them for dissent or petulance he would have a word but most of mine are for mistimed tackles so I don't think they are too worried.
"My friends and me laugh about it. We say, 'can you really tackle now?'
"If you watch any football match across Europe on the telly, even in the Premier League, you think it is never even a foul never mind a yellow card.
"There is a fine line between what is acceptable or not these days so it is about getting the balance.
"I got suspended once last season and If I can keep it to once a season then it will be alright."
