The Portuguese forward has been enjoying his best season at the club despite the team's struggles, scoring nine goals in 13 Bundesliga appearances so far.
However, Bremen sporting director Klaus Allofs revealed that player and club are "miles apart" with respect to his wage demands.
Allofs said: "I am not convinced that we will find solutions to renew his contract.
"The player's expectations over what we will and can do don't make sense. We are miles apart.
"What he wants, he cannot earn with us."

Almeida's current contract expires in June 2011, meaning that he is free to open talks with other clubs in January over a free transfer next summer.
La Liga giants Real Madrid, managed by Almeida's compatriot Jose Mourinho, are one of several clubs reportedly tracking the 26-year-old.
