The right-back returns to the Bundesliga, where he played for Borussia Dortmund prior to his move to Anfield in 2008.

The 27-year-old struggled for first team opportunities on Merseyside, making just seven Premier League appearances during his two-season stay there.

Degen's move sees him link up again with coach Christian Gross, whom he played under at FC Basel.

The Switzerland international said: "For me this loan represents a great chance to rediscover my best form."
