Andy Robertson says Scotland played ‘much more like us’ in 1-1 draw with Switzerland

Scotland captain Andy Robertson was full of praise for his team as they bounced back from their disappointing opening defeat to Germany at Euro 2024 with a mature performance against Switzerland that yielded a point with a 1-1 draw. It leaves Scotland with a chance of making it through the group stages, with a win against Hungary likely to see them advance.

Clarke: Scotland are ‘still alive’ in Euro 2024 after ‘good team performance’

Scotland showed much more of what they are capable of in their second Euro 2024 match against Switzerland according to captain Andy Robertson, who was clearly buoyed by his team’s performance in the 1-1 draw
Having lost 5-1 to Germany in the opening match of the tournament, Scotland could have let the nerves get the better of them again but instead scored an early goal courtesy of Scott McTominay.
They conceded later in the first half courtesy of a screamer from Xherdan Shaqiri – the Swiss star picking up the ball from a poor back pass from Tony Ralston.
Robertson didn’t shy away from that moment, but wanted to focus on the positives in his post-match interview.
“More like us, much more like us. Aggressive, on the front foot, couldn't get off to a better start," he told BBC Sport.
"We make a mistake but make no mistake about it, Tony Ralston was unbelievable after that mistake. Second half, he was different class.
"We had our chances but so did they. We were a lot more happy with that performance. We'll take the draw and we've taken it into the last game and that's all we can ask.”
Boss Steve Clarke called the moment Ralston's pass got intercepted "heartbreaking," but was reasonably accepting with the resultant goal.
"If it falls to any other Swiss players, I don't think they score. If it falls to Xherdan Shaqiri, you know where the ball's going to end up. We get harshly punished for a small mistake but we responded," he said.
Scotland play Hungary on Sunday, and a win could see them claim second in the group and an automatic spot in the round of 16 – but even if they finish third, they could still progress.
"We need to go again Sunday because that's a massive game for us now. We can take a lot of positives from tonight but we can also tweak a little thing and improve even more and that's a good thing,” continued Robertson.
"We need to get to bed now and recover, take tomorrow and really recover proper. Come Sunday we'll be good to go with the backing that we've got."
Billy Gilmour is one of the youngest members in the Scotland squad, but he showed great maturity in the match and also when he spoke afterwards.
Like his captain, he was pleased with the performance Scotland displayed – more than answering any critics from that opening game defeat.
"We gave everything out there. We knew we had to bounce back after the last performance and it puts us in a good place.
"We're a good team. We know our strengths. Tonight was more like a Scotland performance, getting after the ball, passionate - everything was there."

'Ten times better' - Gunn

Angus Gunn was another player who left the field not just pleased with his own performance - but that of the whole side.
He saw first-hand how doggedly they defended throughout the match, repelling multiple Swiss chances in the second half.
"Everything in the game from the start was 10 times better from the game on Friday night - our intensity, pressing the ball, our aggression, winning the ball high up," the goalkeeper said.
"Personally, I was hurting after the game on Friday night, didn't feel like I had done myself justice. A lot of the boys in the dressing room felt like that as well.
"That was the motivation for today - to come out, show what we're all about and I think everyone to a man has done that today."

The bad news for Scotland is that it looks like they will be without Kieran Tierney for their final group match against Hungary after he was stretchered off with an apparent hamstring injury, with Scotland boss Clarke saying he is "definitely out".
"It looks pretty bad. We have to assess it but Kieran won't make the next game," Clarke confirmed.
"He's a top player for us. Does ever so well. It's a shame, but someone else has got to step in and step up to the mark."
