The Euro 2024 group stage has reached its conclusion and the 16 remaining sides now look ahead to the knockout round where the competition heats up. England topped Group C, but did not know who they would face in the round of 16 until all group matches had wrapped up on Wednesday. With the group stage over, the road to Berlin is now firmly set.

Southgate 'won't back away' from England fans' criticism

Euro 2024 got off to a flying start, with drama, great games and goals aplenty in a group stage full of intrigue.
Teams that had topped their group or secured qualification early, such as England, were forced to wait for the culmination of the group stage to find out who they would face.
With all group fixtures now wrapped, we now know the make-up of the last 16 draw.
Here we explain which teams have qualified for the knockout stages and who England will face in the last 16 as the road to Berlin is laid.

Which teams have qualified for the knockout stages?

Group A
Tournament hosts Germany became the first side to secure their place in the knockout stages of Euro 2024 with a 2-0 win over Hungary.
They face Denmark, who finished second in Group C after drawing all three games, including against England.
Germany were on the brink of losing to Switzerland and missing out on first place, but a late goal from Niclas Fullkrug was enough to secure top spot for the host nation.
The Swiss booked their passage after two draws and win, and they face Group B runners-up Italy.
Hungary's 1-0 win over Scotland was not enough to secure them a spot as one of the top third-placed sides and they head home.
Group B
Spain are through to the last 16 as Group B winners after a 1-0 victory against Albania on Monday evening. They face Georgia, who shocked Portugal with a 2-0 victory to secure their passage. Spain are the only side in the tournament who won all three of their group games.
A dramatic late equaliser meant Italy progressed as runners-up, while Croatia's meagre two points were not enough to secure them as one of the best third-placed sides.
Albania exited the tournament following their defeat to Spain with just one point.
Group C
England topped the group after limping to an uninspiring goalless draw against Slovenia, but had to wait until Wednesday night to find out who they face in the round of 16.
Gareth Southgate's side dodged a clash with the Netherlands and now face Slovakia who finished third in Group E.
Denmark secured second place and face hosts Germany.
Slovenia's draw with England was enough to see them through in third and they now face Portugal.
Group D
Austria topped Group D in a plot twist after a thrilling 3-2 win over the Netherlands, and now face Turkey, who scored a 94th-minute winner in their final group game to finish second.
France, despite failing to score a goal in open play at this tournament, finished second and will need to ramp it up when they face Belgium in the round of 16.
Netherlands, despite losing to Austria, managed to muster enough points to go through in third and avoid a clash with England. They face Romania who topped Group E.
Group E
Group E finished with all four sides bizarrely finding themselves on four points.
Romania top the group and face the Netherlands. Belgium's 2-0 victory against Romania ensured they finished second to face tournament favourites France.
Slovakia's 1-1 draw with Romania was enough to see them through. They face England, who have faced heavy criticism for their performances and could be vulnerable to a shock upset.
Unfortunately for Ukraine, their draw with Belgium in their final game was not enough to progress from the group and their subpar goal difference sees them sit bottom.
Group F
Despite a shock 2-0 loss to Georgia, Portugal topped their group and progressed to a clash with Slovenia in the knockout round. They secured their win after a 3-0 win over Turkey.
Turkey scored a thrilling 94th-minute goal against the Czech Republic on Wednesday night to also reach the knockouts. They face Austria, who have surprisingly emerged as one of the form sides in the tournament, topping a group that involves France and the Netherlands.
Georgia's greatest football night came on Wednesday as they saw off Euro 2016 winners Portugal with an incredible and inspiring 2-0 win. The Georgians secured third place to go through in their first-ever major tournament appearance.
They face Spain, the only side to win all three group games.

Who will England face in the last 16?

As winners of Group C, England now face Slovakia. It looked likely that Southgate's side would face the Netherlands, but Georgia's shock win over Portugal ensured they take on Slovakia.
While that is a friendlier fixture than the Dutch, England have yet to fire in this tournament and are under intense scrutiny. If they are not careful, they could slip up against Slovakia.
The main bit of good news for England and their fans is that they are now on the opposite side of the draw from Germany, France, Spain and Portugal.
