Some of the best goalscorers in the world are on display at Euro 2024, and will compete for individual honours in the race for the Golden Boot. Cristiano Ronaldo, who is the top scorer in the competition's history with 14 goals, won the award at the last tournament. Ronaldo and 2016 Golden Boot winner Antoine Griezmann have the chance to become the first two-time winners of the award in Germany.

Southgate 'won't back away' from England fans' criticism

The best goalscorers in Europe are battling for individual honours at Euro 2024 in the race for the Golden Boot, the award given to the top scorer of the tournament.
The European Championship is currently taking place in Germany, with many of the best strikers in the world on display.
Cristiano Ronaldo, who became the all-time leading scorer in the competition with five goals at Euro 2020, was the last Golden Boot winner and will hope to add to his overall Euros tally of 14 for Portugal.
Ronaldo edged Czech Republic forward Patrik Schick, who also scored five goals in Euro 2020, to claim the Golden Boot on a tiebreaker last time around by having more assists.
France’s Antoine Griezmann claimed the honours in 2016 with six goals, while Fernando Torres (2012), David Villa (2008) and Milan Baros (2004) were the previous three Golden Boot winners.
Ronaldo and Griezmann both have the chance to become the first two-time winner of the Golden Boot in Euros history.
France legend Michel Platini has the record for most goals scored in a single edition of the European Championship with nine goals in 1984.

Euro 2024 Golden Boot standings

  • 3 goals: Georges Mikautadze (Georgia)
  • 2 goals: Jamal Musiala (Germany), Ivan Schranz (Slovakia), Niclas Fullkrug (Germany), Cody Gakpo (Netherlands), Razvan Marin (Romania)
  • 1 goal: Various

What happens if there is a tie?

If there is more than one player with the same number of goals at the end of the tournament, the tiebreaker will go to the player with the most assists.
If there is still more than one player tied, the award will go to the player who has the fewest minutes played.
Prior to 2008 when the tiebreaker was introduced, the Golden Boot award was shared if there was more than one top scorer.

How many Own Goals have there been?

Own goals have played a role in deciding which teams reach the last 16 at Euro 2024 and which are sent home.
There have been seven in the tournament so far, and with so much football left to play, it looks like Euro 2020's tally of 11 could still be topped.
Antonio Rudiger, Maximiilian Wober, Robin Hranac and Klaus Gjasula have all found the back of their own net.
As have Riccardo Calafiori, Samet Akaydin and the Netherlands' Donyell Malen.
There had only been 20 own goals in the history of the European championship before the start of the tournament.
