England v Slovenia live - Euro 2024 latest as Bukayo Saka has goal disallowed in stalemate

A cross from Slovenia's left, after a clever throw-in routine, is just beyond the reach of Sporar.

A sustained spell of England possession goes nowhere, then Stones can't control a square pass so Slovenia get a throw-in in the opposition half.

But is just offside. Saka slipped once the cross came in regardless.

Captain Kane turns well on the edge of the box, but his pass into a crowded area cannot find a team-mate.

Saka's first real involvement is charging down a clearance, after an England long ball conceded possession.

A deep cross from the left is headed back into the England box, where Sesko has a free header, but there is little pace on the ball and Pickford saves quite comfortably.

Oblak undercooks a pass out to right-back Karnicnik, but he gets there just before Foden.

A few seconds later, Drkusic slides in robustly on Foden by the corner flag but there is no foul and Slovenia get the goal kick.

England, all in white, get the game underway. Slovenia are all in blue.

A draw would suit England as it keeps both teams behind them. Serbia cannot overtake England whatever combination of results, while Denmark can only do so if they win and England fail to do so.

TNT Sports expert Paul Scholes has had his say on the Kane debate, urging England's captain to stay forward and be less involved in build-up play.

"He's not happy if he's not involved in the game all the time and I think this team, it probably needs a centre forward who's not that bothered if he's only going to touch the ball two, three, maybe four times a half," Scholes said.

"You see it with Manchester City and [Erling] Haaland, but what they do, they create space for the other people and you have to realise that and he’s not that type of player."

The television cameras have picked up Jordan Pickford looking pretty gingerly at his hand, but the shot-stopper seems okay. Crisis averted.

Austria have won Group D thanks to a 3-2 victory over the Dutch, as you can read below.

It means the Netherlands finish third in that group and are the most likely opponents of Group C's winners - but not guaranteed opponents. We do know whoever finishes second in this group will plat hosts Germany.

England have five wins and a draw from six previous games against Slovenia.

England's manager also insisted the "mood's very good" in the camp as he plots for the team to "hit a different level" versus Slovenia.

Slovenia's starting line-up is the same as for the 1-1 draw with Serbia. It means Benjamin Sesko, the in-demand striker who is yet to score at Euro 2024, has been deemed fit.

Slovenia: Oblak, Karnicnik, Drkusic, Bijol, Janza, Stojanovic, Cerin, Elsnik, Mlakar, Sporar, Sesko.

One change for England, as expected. Conor Gallahger replaces Trent Alexander-Arnold in the much-scrutinised midfield.

Harry Kane keeps his place up front, despite questions around his fitness and ability to press, while Keiran Trippier continues at left-back with Phil Foden ahead of him. Luke Shaw, seen by many including it would appear the manager as the solution to England's lack of thrust down the left flank, is on the bench, but whether he is fit enough to take the field remains to be seen.

England are already through to the last 16 but could finish anywhere from first to third, so their opponents are up in the air. Perhaps more important than the result in Cologne is the performance. Gareth Southgate's team have not impressed through two games - despite picking up a win, followed by a draw against semi-finalists from three years ago - and you could be forgiven for thinking they are on the verge of elimination given the general gloom which surrounds the camp.

A strong performance and emphatic win would blow much of that negativity away, but an undefeated Slovenia team stand in England's way. Given a draw will be enough for Slovenia to qualify, it may well serve them to try and frustrate England.
