WE'RE WATCHING VT OF VAN DIJK
A fine, fine player. But nowhere near as good as he once was, in mine - no one, not even him, can return from a cruciate late in their career the same player - and though he might be able to dredge a performance or two from the recesses of his soul, I can't see him being definitive in this tournament.

CAN NETHERLANDS WIN IT?
My sense is that no, they cannot. If they come second to France, it's probably Portugal next, but perhaps they somehow win it, in which case the next round looks kind. However it's hard to see how they control games against the best, and they don't - perhaps yet - have the individuals to make all of that irrelevant.

AS FOR NETHERLANDS
They'll look to their full-backs and wide attackers to get down the sides of the Polish wide centre-backs, but ultimately will rely on their extra class to get this one done.
13:38
WHERE IS THE GAME?
Poland will be looking to test Virgil van Dijk and Stefan de Vrij's pace in behind, and also look to take advantage of Denzel Dumfries' adventure. On the other side, meanwhile, Nathan Ake is not really a full-back, so Kacper Urbański will fancy his chances.

OF COURSE
Holland have enjoyed a Germany Euros once before...
13:30
NETHERLANDS
Look a decent outfit. I don't think they can win the thing, but a front three of Xavi Simons, Memphis Depay and Cody Gakpo can do damage, even if their midfield of Joey Veerman, Jerdy Schouten and Tijjani Reijnders is unproven at this level - to say the least.

POLAND
Are indeed without the injured Lewandowski. They will, though, be a threat in midfield, especially if Zielinski can find time on the ball. Their 3-4-3 formation, though, looks vulnerable; I'd not be surprised to see them outnumbers out wide and in central areas.

I'LL WRITE THESE DOWN
Then we'll wonder what they mean.

HELLO AND WELCOME
Today we bring you LIVE coverage of Poland's Group D opener against Netherlands.
It's a while since the 1988 champions have been a serious force in international football, and deprived, through injury, of Frenkie de Jong and Teun Koopmeiners, it's not been an easy preparation. But their defence is settled with attacking threat coming from the full-backs; in midfield, they have solidity and creativity; and they've a roster of talented strikers any one of whom might just hit a seam at the right time.
Poland, meanwhile, only scraped qualification and though Robert Lewandowski is due a meaningful tournament, chances are he's no longer able to deliver one; he's injured currently and last season was the first time he looked gone. But Piotr Zielinski and Nicola Zalewski give them midfield invention, and on a good day they're a hard night for anyone.
