    FIRST BOOKING OF THE NIGHT
And it goes to Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma for complaining to the referee about something or other. Silly booking really, but the authorities are clamping down on such dissent these days.

ITALY LOOK TO HIT ON THE COUNTER
Excellent break down the Spanish left-hand side by Italy, but the cross by Federico Dimarco is easily cleared by Spain before Simon is off his line to collect with Italy offside. Lovely tempo about this contest. Really is.

    SPAIN BLOW ANOTHER BRILLIANT CHANCE
This time Morata throws over a delightful cross, but Williams somehow nods the ball wide of goal from five yards out. How did he miss that? Such a brilliant start by Williams, but should have a goal to go with it. Still 0-0.

ITALY TAKING THE STING OUT OF THE GAME
Has been a whirlwind start by Spain, but Italy finding their feet slowly but surely. Chance for Gianluca Scamacca to get away a shot, but he hesitates and Spain do some diligent defending to clear.

    ITALY NEEDING A BREATHER
Superb attacking menace from Spain so far as Pedri is penalised for a late challenge on Lorenzo Pellegrini. And he needs some medical treatment.

    A BREATHLESS START TO EVENING
As you would expect in such an elite contest, one that has been the hallmark of the European game over the years. Italy certainly being bossed about early doors as Spain look to move the ball at pace in the opposition half.

ALMOST A DREAM START FOR SPAIN!
Brilliant wing play by Williams to hit the byline. Gets the cross over with some real menace, but the header by Pedri is clawed over by Donnarumma. Superb save.

    TEAMS ARE IN THE TUNNEL
The tension is mounting as Spain and Italy prepare for this key Euro 2024 battle tonight. Who will come out on top? This is the 11th time they've met at a major event, and the fifth straight encounter at a European Championship. Italy have lost only once, the Euro 2012 final when they were overwhelmed 4-0 in Kyiv. So history certainly favours Italy, but when does history matter in the here and now?

A BIT MORE REACTION FROM SERBIA'S LATE, LATE SHOW
It was a cruel way for Slovenia to end their match with Serbia, but this is football at the elite level. There are no favours at Euro 2024. Chances must be taken to avoid misery.

WHAT HAPPENED IN TODAY'S EARLY MATCH?
Serbia are still alive at Euro 2024 after AC Milan striker Luka Jovic scored a dramatic last-minute equaliser for his team against Slovenia to earn what could be a crucial point. Slovenia had taken the lead through Zan Karnicnik in the second half as Serbia looked destined for a second defeat. But in the last minute Jovic headed home an equaliser for Serbia. Read more here:

WHAT CHANGES WILL WE SEE TONIGHT?
Spain make just one change from their 3-0 win over Croatia as Aymeric Laporte comes in for Nacho in central defence after recovering from a muscle injury. Meanwhile, Italy are unchanged from their opening 2-1 victory over Albania. The tension is mounting at Arena AufSchalke, and we are still 20 minutes from kick-off. Expect some brilliance from Barcelona's teenage winger Lamine Yamal, who starts tonight's match.

CAN'T GET ENOUGH OF A GOOD THING
Here is how Carvajal slipped home Spain's third in their 3-0 victory over Group B rivals Croatia at the weekend. Italy will be much less charitable this evening. Or at least that is the theory when you consider Spain's 4-0 victory over the Azzurri in the Euro 2012 final in Kyiv. Surely that can't be emulated tonight? Surely not.

LET'S HAVE SOME DANI CARVAJAL MAGIC
This is how the Real Madrid wing-back helped to settle the UEFA Champions League final earlier this month as Los Blancos completed a 2-0 win over Borussia Dortmund at Wembley for their record 15th European Cup triumph. He will be a major threat to Italy this evening.

BREAKING NEWS: ENGLAND HELD BY DENMARK IN FRANKFURT
A disappointing England performance ended with a sloppy 1-1 draw against Denmark that left Gareth Southgate’s side in control of Group C, but with even more questions as to their credentials as contenders for the tournament. England lacked purpose and were outplayed by a Denmark side who will be frustrated they couldn’t take more from the game after Morten Hjulmand's stunning strike. Read full report here:

WELCOME TO A GENUINE EURO 2024 HEAVYWEIGHT BATTLE
These two European giants both know they will secure their progress with a win tonight. Spain enjoyed a dominant 3-0 win over Croatia in their Euro 2024 opener on Saturday with defending champions Italy coming from behind to overcome Albania 2-1. The 2-2 draw between Croatia and Albania on Wednesday also does neither of these sides any harm as they look to reach the last 16 this evening. A draw would probably suit both teams this evening. Should be a cracking few hours ahead.
