Unai Emery (Valencia coach): "We could look back on (a controversial non-penalty against Atletico at the same stage in 2010) to try to motivate the players but we won't do it. We put that incident behind us as soon as it happened and you have to look forward and wait for another chance. We have to focus on today, how we will approach the game and how we build up our hopes."

Valencia’s only major absentees are the suspended full-back Antonio Barragan and midfielder Ever Banega, out long-term with a broken ankle. The return to fitness of striker Roberto Soldado means their formation will be geared to feeding the Spain international, with Jonas playing off him. Centre-halves Adil Rami and Victor Ruiz are one booking away from suspension, as is midfielder Tino Costa.

Atletico’s Diego Godin is suspended, while fellow defenders Silvio Pereira and Antonio Lopez are injured. Juanfran Torres and Joao Miranda fill in for the first two, with Filipe Luis a starter at left-back anyway. Miranda and midfielder Diego are one booking away from a suspension.
