Boro were trailing to the club propping up the division when Josh Vela scored but after Rhodes levelled in the 73rd minute, Boro mustered another late winner for the second time in five days, this time through their £9million striker.
The result in the early game, added to Brighton's 5-0 win against Fulham on Friday, put pressure on Burnley for their trip to Birmingham.
George Boyd's 31st-minute low drive eased their nerves but Jacques Maghoma headed an equaliser before Boyd set up Andre Gray for a 77th-minute winner which lifted the Clarets back up to second. Birmingham had Jon Toral sent off in stoppage time.
Teenage forward Andre Dozzell marked his Ipswich debut with the equaliser as they held play-off hopefuls Sheffield Wednesday to a 1-1 draw at Hillsborough after Fernando Forestieri's third goal in five games had given the Owls the lead.
Seventh-placed Cardiff could not take advantage as they were held 0-0 by Queens Park Rangers but Johnny Russell's header earned Derby a 1-0 victory at Charlton, who can now be relegated on Tuesday.
MK Dons also look to be heading for the drop but they at least claimed a point at Preston in dramatic fashion. Jermaine Beckford's first-half opener was cancelled out by Nicky Maynard before the Dons had goalkeeper Cody Cropper sent off and Alex Revell was forced to go in goal, but the striker saved the resulting penalty from Joe Garner.
Bristol City looked set to be mathematically safe after Lee Tomlin's goal gave them the lead at Brentford but Scott Hogan made an amends for his penalty miss four minutes earlier by heading an injury-time equaliser for the Bees.
Chris Wood scored twice as Leeds edged Reading 3-2 on Brian McDermott's return to Elland Road. Michael Hector's first-half opener for the Royals was cancelled out by Toumani Diagouraga before Wood headed Leeds in front.
Substitute Deniss Rakels restored Reading's lead in the 82nd minute but Wood pounced on a mistake by Jake Cooper to take Leeds into the top half of the table.
Nahki Wells netted his 17th goal of the season and Matt Kilgallon scored an own goal as Huddersfield won at Blackburn for the first time since 1986 while Rotherham extended their unbeaten run to nine matches with a goalless draw at home to Nottingham Forest.
