After a spot of head-tennis in the centre-circle, Wigan bring the ball forward and McArrthur's through ball is intercepted.

Villa have had 53% of the possession so far, though it feels like more.

Brilliant from McCarthy. N'Zogbia cuts in from the right after good work by Agbonlahor and Baker. McCarthy chips the ball over Collins and into the area before laying the ball off for Rodallega who, under pressure from Cuellar, shots high and wide.

Makoun pulls back Rodallega and gets a yellow card. Pointless. I'd be furious if I was Houllier. Hendry Thomas smacks the resulting free-kick over the bar.

Young plays in Bent as he nips in between Boyce and Caldwell, but it's a heavy first touch and Al Habsi collects the stray ball.

A minute later, Figueroa fouls Downing - a little tug on his shirt - and he's given a yellow card.

A long ball is played over the top, it's on it's way into Al Habsi's arms when Bent is tripped needlessly by Gohouri. A tad cynical for my liking, but it was never a 'goal-scoring opportunity'.

Good chance for Wigan to test Friedel from this free-kick. Rodallega takes it...and it's way over. Harmless.

Reo-Coker blocks N'Zogbia and a free-kick is awarded. Reo-Coker gets a little shove form McCarthy. Handbags comnmence.

Bit of pressure from Wigan now...

And now N'Zogbia pops up again. The Frenchman runs with the ball across the penalty area before chipping a shot just over Friedel's bar. That was only an inch over, at most.

N'Zogbia breaks and nips in front of Baker before squaring the ball to Rodallega. His shot takes a deflection and Friedel pulls off an awkward save before the ball is cleared.

Great ball from Cuellar; a whipped cross for Bent to run on to, but it's slightly behind the £24m man.

Have Wigan had a man sent off? Villa seem to have more players so far...

Downing is put through on goal and despite Bent being totally unmarked in the middle, Downing shoots right at Al Habsi. That should have been 1-0.

Bent should be getting lots of service tonight, with Downing, Young and Reo-Coker providing balls from midfield and Agbonlahor supporting from the flank.

Wigan cannot keep possession, Di Santo and then Rodallega with misplaced passes.

Collins fouls Rodallega and it's a free-kick to Wigan, which the Colombian takes himself. It's a very poor effort and Friedel catches comfortably.

Ashley Young belts a free-kick long up the pitch to Darren Bent. He's on his own, but still manages to get the ball but shoots tamely at Al Habsi. That was a real chance for Bent there.

Di Santo goes close with a flicked effort, but it just goes over the bar.
