Martin O'Neill: “Sam is a very experienced manager with a tried and tested set of methods that have proven successful for him. When he went to West Ham United and they were in the Championship, you always felt that they were likely then to get out of the division because of his appointment. And now he is back in the Premier League, you have to say that you expect West Ham to stay in this division."

Sam Allardyce: "Everybody is buzzing about the free-scoring nature of Arsenal yet Sunderland managed to get a 0-0 draw. Then, against Swansea they took the lead twice and knowing Martin as I do he will have felt disappointed not to win the game. I know what to expect from Sunderland having studied those two games and also from knowing Martin and the way he structures his teams. We have to make sure we are capable of breaking them down and ensure that when we create opportunities, we take them."

This West Ham side doesn't look particularly potent. Carroll is a big miss for them while Cole just doesn't convince at this level. A trio of Nolan, Diame and Noble gives them strength in the centre of midfield but Sunderland have much more craft in the shape of James McClean and Stephane Sessegnon, and more threat in attack in Steven Fletcher. I fancy Sunderland to nick a win here.

Time for some stats from Opta: "If the Hammers keep a clean sheet they will equal their best run of three home shut outs from the start of a Premier League season. Sunderland have won none of their last nine Premier League away games (W0 D5 L4). Sunderland have averaged five shots per game this season, fewer than any other team in the top flight. Steven Fletcher has scored three goals from three shots on target for the Black Cats."

Andy Carroll may be back in light training but he isn't quite ready to return to the first XI yet. In his absence, Carlton Cole starts as a lone striker with Ricardo Vaz Te and Matt Taylor playing wide. That means the Hammers are unchanged from the side that drew 0-0 at Norwich last weekend.
14:30
Sunderland are still missing Adam Johnson due to a thigh injury so Jack Colback keeps his place in the team. They make one change from the 1-1 draw against Liverpool last weekend, Titus Bramble replacing Carlos Cuellar, who is out with a hamstring problem.

Sunderland have drawn all three of their games this season - two of which came against Arsenal and Liverpool. West Ham sit up in eighth place after winning two, drawing one and losing one.
