And they have! That could scarcely have been a more nervy finish for Liverpool, who looked so secure after Sturridge's goal, but they've managed to hang on in the end and they won't care a jot. That's three points for Liverpool, who are now just four points away from the summit and with a game in hand, Manchester City's charge notwithstanding. It's Liverpool 2, Sunderland 1 at Anfield.

John O'Shea - no stranger to late winners in front of the Kop - really should have scored there. Adam Johnson's free-kick found him at the back post but he couldn't turn the ball home. Huge let-off for Liverpool.

Sunderland continue to drive Liverpool back as nerves begin to sink in around the ground. Can they deal a severe blow to the hosts' title hopes?

Sunderland attack and Phil Bardsley sees his effort fly out for a throw-in after being blocked, but it's mysteriously awarded to Liverpool. The game still finely-balanced here at Anfield.

Suarez is brought down by Bridcutt, and Liverpool have a free-kick. Suarez opts to shoot, but he can't get it on target.

Liverpool try to stop Sunderland's comeback before it can happen, but their attack ends with Suarez floating a tame effort towards goal which Mannone claims with ease. Can the visitors find another? Liverpool have let in three against Cardiff and Swansea and two against Fulham in their last six games, and Sunderland might fancy their chances here too...

GOAL! And it's in! Ki heads home at the back post! And now there's a huge chance for Sunderland to claim something - we may have quite a finale here at Anfield.

Ki - who has looked sharp since coming on - has a decent effort but it's blocked, although Sunderland have a corner as a result.

Liverpool want a penalty again after Coutinho goes down under contact in the area, although replays show that he had already slipped before the collision was made. Good decision.

Now Sturridge hits the bar at the other end! On his right foot, he curls an effort towards the top corner but leans back just too much and sees it cannon off the woodwork.

Sunderland millimetres away from a goal! Sunderland's pressure continues, and Johnson finds Cattermole - he lashes in a fine effort which looks for all the world like it's going in, but it bounces off the underside of the bar. Amazingly, Cattermole has never scored for the Black Cats. He won't get much closer than that.

This is much better from Sunderland, particularly from Ki Seung-Yeung as they enjoy a spell of pressure on the Liverpool goal, but they can't quite find a decisive pass and the hosts eventually clear.

Coutinho is played in behind the Sunderland defence, and from a tight angle he tries to dink it over the onrushing Mannone, but the Italian stands tall and claims the ball easily. A missed opportunity for Liverpool to well and truly put Sunderland away.

The game seems to have settled down a bit now, which will probably favour Sunderland if anything - usually bigger teams are most comfortable when the pace has gone from the game, but this Liverpool side seem to be the opposite.

Johnson and Ki are indeed on, taking the place of Giaccherini and Wickham respectively.

Bardsley delivers a deep cross into the Liverpool area looking for Connor Wickham, but Simon Mignolet is out to claim it.

Adam Johnson and Ki Seung-Yeung are warming up for Sunderland. They'll certainly need something else to get anything here, but will it be enough?

Suarez goes down outside the area, but again there's no free-kick. Liverpool look by far the likelier to score next - they have their heads up now and the crowd are lifting them.
