Jose Mourinho had insisted that the Blues would not sign any more players this summer, but on Monday evening several organisations - including the Guardian, Sky Sports and the Daily Mail - claimed that a five-year contract is in place.
The Mail claims that the initial fee payable will be £14m, rising to a potential £21m if and when Rahman makes his 100th Chelsea appearance.
The latest reports from Germany have poured a little cold water on the initial report, claiming that Augsburg are after £21m up front for Baba, with Marko Marin thrown to be used as a potential makeweight.
But who is the 21-year-old? Our colleague Katharina Wiedenmann at Eurosport Germany has the full lowdown.

VERDICT FROM GERMANY

Last August Baba joined Augsburg for €2.5m after two seasons at Greuther Furth.
Since then, however, his staggering development as a left-back has seen him linked with possible moves to Manchester City, Arsenal and now Chelsea.
He played 31 Bundesliga matches last season and was an important factor in Augsburg´s success. They finished fifth last season, their best-ever result for a Bundesliga season.
Baba is good at defensive tackling, but he is particularly strong when attacking down the left wing. His crosses create a lot of danger, and he is fast.

His only weakness? His passing is sometimes imprecise. But he's still only 21, so could easily improve it.
As for his price? It's astonishing given that he was worth just €2.5m last summer, and a Bundesliga club would never dream of paying even €20m for him.
And any move would be very difficult for him. At Augsburg everything is quiet, the pressure is way, way less than he'd face at Chelsea. There would be a huge learning curve for him adjusting to that situation.
