Manchester United are set to make a fresh attempt to sign defender Matthijs de Ligt after retaining an interest in the player, while Newcastle need to sell players in order to avoid a points deduction. Elsewhere, Ligue 1 outfit Lyon could sell Dylan O’Brien back to the Premier League, and Chelsea could offer Nicolas Jackson in part-exchange for Alexander Isak.

United keen on Bayern defender De Ligt

Manchester United retain an interest in Bayern Munich central defender Matthijs de Ligt.
The central defender played for Erik ten Hag at Ajax, and a reunification could now be on the cards.
The Independent reports: “Manchester United are interested in Matthijs de Ligt as their summer search for central-defensive reinforcements continues.
“The Bayern Munich defender played for Erik ten Hag at Ajax and was a stalwart of the side that reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2019.
“United have admired De Ligt for years and he has emerged as an option this summer, though they are yet to submit an offer.
“United need at least one and possibly two central defenders in the transfer window. They have released Raphael Varane and Jonny Evans’ contract has expired, though they are in talks with the 36-year-old about extending his stay, while Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof both have a solitary year left on their current deals.”

Newcastle face transfer scramble

With the Profit and Sustainability Rules deadline looming, Newcastle are desperate to find buyers for some of their players.
The Athletic reports that the club are shopping around Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson, who could generate significant profit.
The website explains: “Newcastle United are in discussions with Nottingham Forest and are speaking to clubs over several alternative deals as they scramble to avoid a penalty under the Premier League’s profitability and sustainability rules (PSR).
“Newcastle will leave themselves open to a points deduction unless they make sales before the PSR deadline on June 30.
“Newcastle are talking to Nottingham Forest about possible deals for players including Yankuba Minteh, the 19-year-old winger, or Elliot Anderson, the 21-year-old midfielder, with right-winger Anthony Elanga potentially arriving at St James’ Park in return. The sales and purchases would be separate deals for PSR purposes, though Forest are under no financial pressure to sell Elanga, who is viewed as a valued member of their squad.
“Minteh was signed by Newcastle from Odense Boldklub last summer for €7 million and starred for Feyenoord on loan last season. He has not yet played for Newcastle, who are keen to sell him to maximise his transfer value. Anderson, a youth academy graduate, would represent ‘pure profit’ under PSR regulations.”

Palace may profit from O’Brien transfer

West Ham, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Everton could move for Lyon defender Jake O’Brien, which could help out Crystal Palace.
A sell-on clause for the £15 million-rated player means that a significant sum of money could come Palace’s way after they sold him last summer.
The Independent states: “Crystal Palace will be owed a percentage of Lyon defender Jake O’Brien’s next move amid serious Premier League interest in the Republic of Ireland international.
“The Eagles are in line for a significant cash windfall with O’Brien set to return to the Premier League this summer following an impressive season in Ligue 1.
“Mail Sport understands the Selhurst Park side included a sell-on clause of up to 25% when they sold him to Lyon last summer - although it is unclear whether the amount Palace would recoup is linked to how much profit Lyon make from the defender’s potential exit.
“West Ham, who are also interested in Wolves’ Max Kilman, have an interest in O’Brien. Everton, too, are understood to have considered a move for the 23-year-old.”

Chelsea prepared to offer Jackson for Isak

The Sun reports that Chelsea are willing to send Nicolas Jackson to Newcastle as part of a deal for Alexander Isak.
With Newcastle wanting at least £100m for Isak, a makeweight may well be necessary.
The paper claims: “Chelsea have discussed including Nicolas Jackson as part of any deal for Newcastle's Alexander Isak.
“The Blues have enquired about the availability of the Swedish striker, who is valued at over £100 million.
“Given the fee being demanded, a deal is unlikely to happen without any players moving the other way - and Jackson has been suggested.
“The Senegal international, 23, endured a turbulent first season at Stamford Bridge, but did end the campaign with 17 goals and six assists in all competitions - bagging four in his last five Premier League games.
"Jackson has been considered an important figure for the future at Chelsea, but could have to be sacrificed should a deal for Isak become possible.
“Despite facing financial issues around profit and sustainability rules, Newcastle are reluctant to sell such an important player.”
