Oliver Rowland’s hopes of clinching a maiden Formula E world title are all but over after he was ruled out of the Portland double-header with an undisclosed illness. The Brit is fourth in the standings and trails leader Nick Cassidy by 36 points with just four rounds remaining. Oliver Rowland’s hopes of winning the 2024 Formula E World Championship are all but over after the Nissan driver was ruled out of this weekend’s Portland E-Prix through illness.
The British driver is currently fourth in the standings, 36 points behind leader Nick Cassidy, with just four rounds of the season remaining.
He has enjoyed his most successful campaign in the all-electric series this year, but his absence from the double-header in Portland means the battle for the title is likely to come down to a three-way shoot-out between Cassidy, Pascal Wehrlein and Mitch Evans.
With Rowland out, Brazil’s Caio Collet is in line to make his Formula E debut. The 22-year-old is Nissan’s reserve and simulator driver but has experience in GEN3 cars having tested in Misano and Berlin earlier this season.
Rowland has six podiums and one victory to his name this year following a poor start in which he failed to pick up a point in the first two races.
He bounced back with back-to-back third-placed finishes in Diriyah and Sao Paulo before a second in Tokyo.
His resurgence continued as a win and a fastest lap in Misano saw him take the maximum 26 points and vault to the top of the standings.
With two podiums in his last six races, he has slipped to fourth but still had a chance of a maiden title until this latest setback.
After this weekend’s action in Portland, the season concludes with a double-header in London on the weekend of July 20 and 21, with all the drama live on TNT Sports and discovery+.
