Dan McKellar leaves Gallagher Premiership club Leicester Tigers after one season by mutual consent

Leicester Tigers head coach Dan McKellar has departed the Gallagher Premiership club by mutual consent. The 47-year-old spent just one season with the Tigers after leaving his role as Australia’s assistant coach in July 2023. The Tigers finished eighth in the Gallagher Premiership table last season and were knocked out of the Investec Champions Cup in the last 16.

Head coach Dan McKellar has left Gallagher Premiership club Leicester Tigers by mutual consent after just one season in charge.
McKellar joined the Tigers on a "long-term deal" in July 2023, replacing Steve Borthwick after his appointment as England coach.
The 2021/22 Gallagher Premiership champions tempted McKellar to leave his position as Australia’s assistant coach after a comprehensive recruitment search, but he struggled to make an impact.
The Tigers finished eighth in the Gallagher Premiership table last season, winning nine matches but also losing nine.
They also lost in the Premiership Cup final to Gloucester and were knocked out of the Investec Champions Cup in the last 16 by Leinster.
In a statement, the Tigers said McKellar would leave his role with "immediate effect" after "extensive discussions regarding the club’s future direction."
The club added that their search for a new head coach was already underway, with pre-season training for players not on international duty set to begin on July 1.
"We thank Dan for his contribution to Leicester Tigers and wish him, Carla, Amelie and Maya well for the future," the statement concluded.
Prior to his time with Australia’s national team, McKellar was head coach of Super Rugby team ACT Brumbies. He started his career as a player, but fully moved into coaching in 2008.
In total, McKellar oversaw 30 games in all competitions while at the Leicester Tigers.
