Wilson opens match against Ford at German Masters with century break

Kyren Wilson’s bid for a second German Masters crown came to a halt at the hands of Tom Ford at the quarter-final stage.
Wilson has fond memories of playing snooker in Germany, having won the German Masters title in Berlin in 2019 - while he also won the European Masters and Paul Hunter Classic in Furth.
But his hopes of a second title at the Tempodrom were dashed at the hands of Ford, who took advantage of a good run of the balls to claim a 5-2 win.
Wilson was impressive in easing past Sam Craigie and Jimmy Robertson to reach the quarter-finals, and continued in that vein with a century to open up against Ford. That was the high point for the former Tempodrom winner.
Ford has been in decent touch this season, the highlight being a run to the semi-finals of the UK Championship, and he countered with a break of 87 in frame two.
Green was not Wilson’s favourite colour in the third frame. After getting in and establishing control, he feathered the green with his cue. To rub salt into open wounds, he split the pack perfectly to hand Ford the chance to counter.
A short while later, after a safety exchange on the green, Ford doubled it to right middle to set up a clearance to move ahead.

Wilson had the chance to shake off the disappointment of the third, but he overcut a red when on a break of 45.
As in the third, Ford countered with a break of 57. He got a big bounce from yellow to green and overcut his attempted pot. It did not prove fatal, as Wilson missed the brown and left it on for Ford to clear and move into the interval with a 3-1 lead.
Wilson’s sense of frustration grew in the fifth following another slice of poor fortune. After getting in, he ran out of position and left himself a tough black. The miss was not surprising, but he saw the white catch the knuckle of the middle pocket, roll down the cushion and into the yellow pocket.
It handed Ford an easy starter, and he converted to get within one frame of victory.
Wilson kept his hopes alive by taking the sixth, but it was by the skin of his teeth. After crafting what looked set to be a frame-winning half-century, Wilson broke down and allowed Ford a shot at a counter.
After picking off reds and colours, Ford went for broke in attempting to get the brown off the right cushion. He failed to move it and it left him out of position.
Wilson got back in and potted an excellent long brown to keep his hopes alive.

‘A great pot’ - Ford sets up victory over Wilson at German Masters in style

Ford was in danger of getting distracted by what he perceived to be a few speedy bounces off cushions, but he steadied himself with an excellent red at the start of the seventh.
A superb yellow followed, and it set him on his way to a match-winning contribution of 99.
It was not plain sailing, but he knocked in a pressure red across the table with his break on 56 to sink Wilson.
Jack Lisowski will be Ford’s opponent in the semi-finals following his 5-3 win over Xiao Guodong.
The Milkman’s semi-final opponent will be Ali Carter who secured a 5-3 win over Pang Junxu.
