Higgins, Selby bounced out

Having kicked off his campaign with victories over Matthew Couch and Stephen Maguire, both 4-2, to reach the last 32, world number two Higgins met his match in Allister Carter, who triumphed 4-1.

Carter goes on to play Fergal O'Brien in the fourth round after the Irishman saw off Billy Joe Castle, Passakorn Suwannawat and Tony Drago to make the final 16.

As the bottom half of the draw played through to the third round at the South West Snooker Academy, Selby also dropped to a third round defeat, the world number three crashing to a shock 4-0 loss to Adam Duffy.

Selby had looked good in his opening two matches earlier in the day against Chris Norbury and Shaun Murphy, both of which he won without dropping a frame.

Duffy will now meet China's Yu Delu for a place in the quarter-finals.

Ronnie O'Sullivan's path into the fourth round was fraught with danger, but the Rocket managed to overcome both Matthew Stevens and Stephen Hendry on his way there. O'Sullivan now meets Liam Highfield.

Completing the last 16 line-up are Neil Robertson and Judd Trump, the Australian having lost just one frame on his through, while Trump had to overcome Mark Davis and Mark Allen on his path through.
