The six-times world finalist did not have it all his own way in his afternoon encounter against the 25-year-old from Bath, losing 3-2 at one stage, but did enough to progress to a match against Nigel Bond on Wednesday.
White recorded breaks of 83, 79 and 67.
The afternoon session saw a shock result when Andrew Norman defeated former Welsh Open runner-up Joe Swail 5-4.
Twenty-year-old Jack Lisowski stormed through with a 5-0 defeat of David Grace and will now face Mike Dunn.
A 5-3 win for Peter Lines over Robin Hull and an impressive 5-2 victory for Thai Passakorn Suwannawat over Jimmy Robertson earned them ties against world number 41 Barry Pinches six-times world champion Steve Davis respectively.
In the evening session Ian McCulloch swept aside Yu Delu 5-1 while Anthony McGill beat Ben Woollaston 5-2.
Kurt Maflin was a 5-3 victor over Joe Jogia, closing out the match with a 123. Cao Yupeng completed a 5-4 victory over Xiao Guodong while Adrian Gunnell disposed of David Morris 5-2.
In the first session of the day South Yorkshire witnessed Alan McManus whitewash David Hogan 5-0.
The Irishman was no match for the Scottish veteran, who did not afford Hogan a chance at the World Snooker Academy.
McManus, formerly as high as sixth in the world rankings, will now face Anthony Hamilton in the next qualifying round.
James Wattana continued his impressive progress with a 5-2 triumph over Andy Hicks; his reward is a clash against fellow seasoned professional Dave Harold.
Other winners from the morning session included Liu Song, who beat Tian Pengfei 5-4 in an all-Chinese tussle, Michael White, who swept aside Alfie Burden 5-2, Liu Chang and Aditya Mehta.
