Number one seed Julia Goerges progressed to the quarter-finals of the Moscow River Cup after a straight-sets victory over Russia’s Natalia Vikhlyantseva 6-2 7-6(7/2).
The German came through 6-2 7-6 (7/2) and will be joined there by compatriot Laura Siegemund, who overcame Alize Cornet of France 4-6 6-2 6-3.
Latvian third seed Anastasija Sevastova also overcame French opposition, in her 6-2 3-6 6-4 defeat of Pauline Parmentier, while Olga Danilovic of Serbia defeated Estonia’s Kaia Kanepi 7-6(7/3) 7-5.
Also in Moscow, there were victories for Russians Anastasia Potapova and Valentyna Ivakhnenko. Potapova won 6-4 6-4 against Kristyna Pliskova of the Czech Republic, and Ivakhnenko overcame compatriot Varvara Flink 7-6(2) 6-3.
At the Nachang Open in China, a strong of Chinese successes delighted the home crowd.
Top seed Shuai Zhang overcame Margarita Gasparyan of Russia 6-4, 6-1 to reach the last eight, second seed Qiang Wang won 6-4 3-6 6-2 against Sabina Sharipova of Uzbekistan, and Lin Zhu defeated the Czech Republic’s Tereza Martincova 6-2 6-3.
There was also a straight-sets victory for En-Shuo Liang of Taiwan, via a 6-1 6-2 triumph against Thai Peangtarn Plipuech.
