The German then ups the ante with a clinical backhand volley to finish off a forehand approach down the line.
Alcaraz survives to deuce when Sascha shanks a forehand towards the top of the Eiffel Tower and the World No.3 comes up trumps with a clutch serve to wipe out a second BP off a double fault.
It’s hit and miss from Carlitos as he cancels out a third opportunity for the German with a sharp pass to back-up a brave dropper and from there he survives to consolidate when the No.4 seed can’t beat the net with a backhand drive off another drop shot.

The Spaniard finally has a say in a Zverev service game as he follows up a bounce smash with some wonderful work around the net to stun a volley and tee up triple break point.
Zverev looks completely shocked by the sudden change-up and he has no answer to another injection of pace from a mid-court missile that effectively breaks him to love.

The notion that the Zverev forehand is a barometer of how he’s feeling on court is highly indicative and it’s fair to say he’s ‘pretty good’ right now.
The German lashes a massive winner down the line off that flank and then finds tremendous crosscourt loop off his unfavoured wing before crushing another to move break point up from 40-15 down.
Alcaraz converts a pressure smash to fend it off but when the German follows up a thumping crosscourt backhand with another off the forehand, the Spaniard’s defence collapses.
The No.3 seed can’t pull free this time and double faults to hand over the double break.

Carlitos presses to deuce but comes out second best in what Bradnam describes as the ‘point of the match’ as he somehow slides low into Alcaraz’s delicious drop volley to bamboozle the Spaniard with a crosscourt pick-up pass.
The serve does the rest and Zverev consolidates to take control of the second.

The German’s eyes light up as Alcaraz struggles with the glare of the sun overhead as he misfires with a smash and then coughs up two break points with a forehand wide.
A huge gust of wind blows clay into the air and flusters the No.4 seed into an error on the first that has Henman quipping ‘it’s like the desert’ on Eurosport Comms.
It doesn’t cost him on his investment though as Alcaraz misfires again to hand over the break.
