'Arms aloft' for Alcaraz as he lights up Chatrier with full-stretch winner

ALCARAZ 6-3 1-1 ZVEREV
Zverev takes control with some powerhouse serving but his forehand malfunctions badly to create a tricky predicament at deuce from 40-15 up.
Cue that clutch serve to duck him out of danger as he slams down a pair of humongous deliveries to end Alcaraz’s hopes of sneaking a break rather emphatically.

ALCARAZ 6-3 1-0 ZVEREV
Zverev can only stare at the lines as Alcaraz storms 40-0 to the good.
The Spaniard leaves his opponent stranded with a perfect dropper to neutralise a wide return before licking the back-end of the baseline with a mid-court forehand howitzer.
Sascha sticks to the task and a sudden dip in the electrifying standards in front of him piques his interest at deuce.
The German charges the net to earn a BP when Carlitos lobs long, but a clutch serve quickly wipes it out.
There’s a cagey face-off around deuce where Alcaraz needs a clutch forehand and serve to swat away two more break points before he finally edges out of dodge with an exceptional crosscourt backhand winner to hold a near 11-minute game.

SET! – ALCARAZ 6-3 ZVEREV
What a way to finish!
Alcaraz produces a bewitching, short angle on a crosscourt forehand winner that looks almost effortless.
It’s the perfect conclusion to a highly impressive set of tennis from the No.3 seed as he breaks again to secure the opener in 43 minutes.
Zverev tried to be aggressive and proactive in that final service game but just got picked off and if Alcaraz maintains this level, it's hard to see what Plan B the Olympic champion can come up with.

ALCARAZ 5-3 ZVEREV
‘It’s like table tennis at times,’ salivates Bradnam on Eurosport Comms with Tim Henman purring in agreement at the high quality of the hitting.
Zverev shows he’s no slouch with some impressive retrieving of his own, but Alcaraz has all the answers as he lunges at full stretch to divert a pass down the line into the open court with a superb, angled volley.
The Spaniard takes charge with a wonderful 1-2 punch drive volley before a mix-up of slice lures the error off the net cord from Sascha and keeps the No.3 seed in the box seat.

ALCARAZ 4-3 ZVEREV
It’s panic stations in the Zverev camp as a lovely change of flight from Alcaraz mid-rally surprises the German and has him ballooning a loopy backhand way long via his forehand response.
It coughs up another two break points that he just about survives as Carlitos’ insane defence creates two passing opportunities that he then flashes into the net.
The No.4 seed needs that trusty serve and it comes to the rescue with a clutch delivery from deuce before the Spaniard lets him wriggle free with a backhand long.

ALCARAZ 4-2 ZVEREV
This time Carlitos consolidates as he dictates with the forehand and rushes the Zverev return with a surprise S+V tactic.
The big German seems to always be on the stretch and he’s almost clawing at thin air as another bazooka of a forehand flies by to close the game to 15.

BREAK! – ALCARAZ 3-2 ZVEREV
Alcaraz comes up with a solution for handling that high-bouncing serve and the hooked return plays a key part here.
There’s the trademark blur of defence as he leaves puffs of clay around his baseline to reach Zverev’s crosscourt strikes and flip the rally in his favour.
A superb forehand on the run down the line tees up triple break point and he rushes the No.4 seed into a forehand into the net to secure the game to love.

ALCARAZ 2-2 ZVEREV
There’s a gasp of delight from the Chatrier crowd as Alcaraz’s delicate crosscourt pick-up far to his right completely bamboozles the German and concludes a strong hold to 15 for the 21-year-old.
Both players appear to have settled after their initial travails on serve.

ALCARAZ 1-2 ZVEREV
That’s more like it from the German.
The massive first serve does all of the heavy lifting as he booms it down, chalking up a maiden ace along the way to a comfortable hold to 15.
Alcaraz could yet rue letting that perfect start flitter away.

BREAK! – ALCARAZ 1-1 ZVEREV
‘Nervous honours even early on here,’ says Chris Bradnam on Eurosport Comms.
He’s not wrong as Alcaraz frames a loopy return out of Paris before leaving himself with it all to do via a double fault and a deservedly punished, poor drop shot.
Zverev doesn’t have to do too much to secure an instant break back as the Spaniard drags a backhand well wide.

BREAK! - ALCARAZ 1-0 ZVEREV
If Zverev was trying to hide the butterflies through a poker face it doesn't pay off as he lets them slip by an early case of the yips.
It’s a pair of double faults to open for the German and he responds by changing racquets immediately.
Some big first serves settle him slightly but he rakes a forehand into the tramlines to endure more stress at deuce.
Alcaraz turns the screw further with a magnificent, low, angled volley and converts the break point with a sweet forehand down the line.

READY? ... PLAY!
Zverev will serve first in what is the first final featuring two men seeking their maiden Roland Garros title since 2016 when Novak Djokovic completed his career Grand Slam with victory over Andy Murray.
Whoever wins today will be the first, first-time RG champion since the Serb lifted the trophy for the first of three times that year.
