French Open 2024 Quarter final result: World Number Two Jannik Sinner beats No.10 seed Grigor Dimitrov on Court Philippe-Chatrier

The Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner books his spot in his third major semi final in his last four Grand Slam events with a straights sets success over the No.10 seed in two hours and 29 minutes.

The Italian took the breaker 7-3 to fend off a late rally from the Bulgarian and mark the day he learned he will become a World No.1 with another solid win.

Sinner will play Carlos Alcaraz or Stefanos Tsitsipas in the last four.

Sinner comes out on top in the pick of the points when he guards the net to swat away everything Dimi can throw at him.

The Italian then snares the mini break and converts with a crosscourt winner to lead at the change of ends.

A new name on the trophy!

It’s very tense out there now and there’s a bizarre moment where Dimi picks up a sideways dropper and plays it towards Jannik who has multiple options, but just lets it hit him!

Grigor turns away and holds his face as he seems to have got clay in his eyes!

The Bulgarian has a big look at the open court for two set points but can’t find the island and Sinner pulls free with a big forehand.

The No.10 seed raises the temperature by digging in at deuce but Sinner stays solid to grind out the hold and take us into a breaker.

It’s far from vintage tennis from Dimitrov but the same can be said of Sinner here.

The Bulgarian hits back from 15-30 with some powerhouse serve and volleying but then takes himself to deuce with a tame forehand into the net.

Sinner remains on the back-foot throughout and a wild forehand wide on the run ensures Grigor guarantees himself the minimum of a breaker.

It’s there for Sinner but he blinks badly and we are all square!

The Italian contrives to fire wide from the forecourt on a sitter in the opening point and he tightens up badly from there.

The errors flow and open the door for Dimi, who makes it count with a massive forehand down the line to keep his tournament alive!

If you wanted an example of how a player can beat themselves, we’ve probably just witnessed it.

Dimitrov implodes from 15-0 up, throwing in a double fault and leaking errors left, right and centre to hand the break to Jannik.

Sinner will now serve for the match and a place in the last four.

Someone needs to find something special on the return as it’s a serving procession at the moment.

Sinner chalks up another clean hold and it’s all square again.

Dimitrov surges through a game for the loss of one point and remains in the hunt.

Sinner book-ends a decent hold to 15 with aces but Dimitrov will still feel he had chances there, drilling wide on a luscious backhand and slicing lamely into the net at 30-15.

It’s not quite firing for the Bulgarian but Jannik is way off his best and if he could just put a red-hot run together he could be in business…

This match is as a tight as it happens been all afternoon long.

Dimitrov looks far more assured, luring Sinner to the net and dismissively flicking the backhand to the open court.

The Italian responds with a delicious lob when the No.10 seed comes in again, but he can’t find the pathway to deuce this time around and Grigor maintains the scoreboard advantage.

A sixth ace and a couple of cheap misses from Dimitrov make it a rather uneventful hold to love for Jannik as he continues to play catch-up in the third.

‘Air Jannik…’

The Italian leaps into the air to pummel away a jump smash after rushing Dimitrov with a rapid return.

It’s eye-catching but not game-changing as the Bulgarian slams a massive first serve down the T to claim a solid hold to 30.

It’s a rollercoaster ride for Jannik as he wrestles the pendulum his way from 15-30 only to see a Dimitrov forehand on the stretch clip the tape and bobble over.

The Bulgarian then plays arguably his best rally of the match to fizz away a forehand and earn his first break opportunity of the quarter final.

Sinner resists and rushes an error long with an improvised forecourt prod and the Italian goes on to dig out the hold via a clutch serve.

Not this time, says Dimi.

The Bulgarian avoids a catastrophic start to Set 3 by fending off break point and grinding out the hold from deuce.

Sinner back pedals majestically to find a pearl of a crosscourt forehand after the Bulgarian had tried to up the ante with an inside-in winner up the line.

The Italian's one-two punch eases him to two set points and a timely first serve seals it with ease.

The Australian Open champion is a set away from the last four.

Dimitrov finds the first serve and the forehand to take charge at 40-15 but then he seems to change sports, hitting a ‘Home Run’ into the crowd off both flanks to help Sinner make deuce.

It’s a case of déjà vu at deuce as he conjures up two clutch serves to wriggle free and pose the serve-out question.
